The network of Western Australian Aboriginal Independent Community Schools is a success story within a wider Indigenous affairs policy environment. The reasons for the success of the school network are complex and varied, but a cornerstone of the effectiveness of the Aboriginal Independent Community Schools has been the Support Unit. Above all, the Support Unit has been effective because of the underlying philosophy of its creation: it is accountable to the independent communities, who safeguard their autonomy at all costs. At the same time it provides a framework of support that achieves two fundamental objectives.
