The college, for secondary aged indigenous students, is adjacent to Litchfield National Park. Students board at the college during (six by six week) school terms, in purpose built ‘Family Group Home’ accommodation. Regular contact between students and their home communities is encouraged.
An enormous challenge for the college is the low literacy and numeracy levels of many students who are commencing their secondary education. Attendance at primary school has been intermittent for many students and therefore some teenagers remain pre-literate upon enrolment at the college.
The college uses the ‘Accelerated Literacy’ program, seeing average student gains of 1½ years per calendar year in literacy and numeracy. Progress is closely monitored and regularly assessed, with students moving onto higher levels as and when they have attained and maintained required standards.
Vocational training is provided for students in automotive, construction and teacher aide training.
The College has had a positive impact since commencing operation in 2002 and will continue to expand its facilities and increase this in future years.
