CWHGS research and teaching focuses on the ways in which a range of social, economic, cultural, psychological, and biological factors affect health. All of our work recognises the importance of gender for health. This means that we are interested in the ways in which health is shaped by women's and men's positions in society and the relationships and distribution of social and economic resources between men and women.
Thus, while our research and teaching are centrally concerned with the health of women, we see gender and the societal context in which women live to be critical influences on women's health. We also recognise the differences among women in a range of factors such as socio-economic position, race or ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation, as well as the importance of these for women's health. We have a strong commitment to improving women's health across the lifespan by addressing gender-based inequities as well as other forms of social and economic disadvantage. Our work also engages with human rights with a focus on women's sexual and reproductive rights.
