Union College is a modern, co-educational, residential establishment situated on the St Lucia campus of the University of Queensland. We have no religious affiliation and the College has, since its inception in 1947, provided a safe, secure and supportive community where residents pursue their academic endeavours whilst enjoying a diverse range of sporting, cultural and social opportunities.
Set amid beautiful gardens that are a feature of our heritage listed college, the 334 residents include undergraduate, postgraduate, domestic and international students. The majority of domestic students come from rural and regional Queensland and Northern NSW. In 2014 Union College was home to students from twenty-four different nations. Our residents forge strong personal bonds and establish professional networks that are life-long.
The Resident Mentor Program is an integral part of the pastoral care system in our College. The young people who are appointed as R.M.’s undergo a rigorous selection process and thorough training program, under the guidance of the Head and Deputy-Head of College, to ensure that they are well equipped to welcome, mentor and support all of the residents of the College, but in particular those who are embarking on their first year of tertiary study.
Self-directed learning is the key to academic success at university. At Union College our residents are supported in this goal in two important ways. Firstly via peer tutoring, whereby students studying the same courses are placed in close proximity so that they can assist one another with study and the understanding of course content. Furthermore, Union College has an excellent tutorial program which is free-of-charge to all residents. Individuals can participate in small group tutorials on a weekly basis for all courses taught at the university. Tutors are selected based on their strong academic achievement, ability to impart knowledge and skills and their strong desire to see academic success for those they tutor. Tutorials are delivered in purpose built, on-site facilities.
There is a strong emphasis on promoting individual development, maturity and academic success, respecting residents as young adults and encouraging them to participate responsibly within the College Community.
