Surfers Paradise Primary School was opened in 1934 in Laycock Street in Surfers Paradise. The present site in St Andrews Avenue on the Isle of Capri was established in 1976 as a result of growth in central Surfers Paradise. The school experienced a decline in population over a number of years. Recent years have seen an increase in population, from below 440 students to more than 600 students. The current site is 2.3 hectares of primarily flat land. There is a variety of garden areas scattered around the school. The grounds are generally easily maintained, with a number of bore-water irrigation systems supporting ovals and gardens. Shade is provided in undercover areas under buildings and in the pool and multipurpose court areas. The Lex Bell Oval, owned by the Gold Coast City Council is used for play and sporting activities.Teachers use a range of approaches to teaching and learning. The staff are professional in approach and contribute significantly to the overall school operation, accepting many responsibilities within the collaborative decision making frameworks implemented at Surfers Paradise Primary School.
