The Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) provides military training and university education for the Australian Defence Force (ADF). The young men and women in ADFA hold the rank of Midshipmen if they are in the Navy or Officer Cadet if they are in the Army or Air Force. They are paid a salary while they complete a military education and training program designed to develop strong leadership qualities of character and leadership appropriate to Officers in the ADF.
Simultaneously they study for undergraduate degrees through the University of New South Wales (UNSW), which provides the academic education on the ADFA campus (UNSW@ADFA). This combination of academic study and military training makes ADFA a unique training institution. Undergraduate studies are sponsored by Defence, so Midshipmen and Officer Cadets do not have to pay for their university education. Degrees are offered in Arts, Business, Science, Engineering and Information Technology.
In order to graduate from ADFA, Midshipmen and Officer Cadets need to complete their degree studies successfully, as well as perform well in their military training program and fulfil all ADF fitness requirements. Graduates from the Academy go on to rewarding careers as Officers in the ADF.
UNSW@ADFA also offers an exciting range of postgraduate programs opened to all members of the public, international students and Defence personnel. Coursework or research students studying at UNSW@ADFA, gain all the advantages of studying with one of Australia’s largest, most well-established and research intensive tertiary institutions.
