The SABC is the major centre in WA for agricultural biotechnology. It has state-of-the-art facilities for molecular research. Research includes plant biotechnology (transgenics, plant pathology, molecular markers, molecular diagnostics, gene mapping, functional genomics), animal biotechnology (protozoan, helminth, viral and bacterial infections, recombinant vaccines, molecular diagnostics and basis of drug action) and rumen biotechnology. Other groups include: Australian Centre for Necrotrophic Fungal Pathogens; Centre for High Throughput Agricultural Genetic Analysis; Centre for Rhizobium Studies and WA Department of Agriculture Biotechnology Services Laboratory.
The SABC provides laboratory space for high technology companies such as Grain Biotechnology Australia, Proteomics International, Saturn Biotech, ID+PLUS, and encourages co-location of biotechnology companies.
