Ampilatwatja School is located 325km north east of Alice Springs in the Ampilatwatja community. The population of the community is approximately 300 and are predominately Alyawarr people. Traditional culture is very strong and the community is governed by the traditional owners. The strength of the traditional owners is reflected in the fact that substance abuse is virtually non-existent and the community is very cohesive. Some students in the community are enrolled in school of the air and access the school's facilities and programs in the afternoon. The community can be accessed all year round via road, 4WD recommended; during heavy rain the road is closed to all vehicles. Ampilatwatja can also be accessed via air through chartered air services only.
Ampilatwatja School is part of the Sandover Group School and provides education to students from preschool to middle years. The school implements various literacy and numeracy programs including First Steps, THRASS, Count Me In Too, Maths 300, Nelson Maths and QuickSmart® Numeracy. The school also implements personal development programs such as You Can Do It and Habits of Mind and also implements the Tribes TLC© Program.
