Murrupurtiyanuwu Catholic School is a primary school offering education from preschool (aged 4 years) to Year 6. Murrupurtiyanuwu Catholic School is situated at Nguiu, the main township of Bathurst Island, an Island in the Arafura Sea off the Australian mainland. The language spoken in our community is Tiwi. For many years, the school was known as St Therese's. Bishop Gsell gave the school this name when he first came to our island. He was a French man and had a great devotion to St Therese. St Therese suffered physically and died very young. She knew pain and she overcome it by her deep faith and trust in her God. The Sisters of the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart established this school in 1912 for the Indigenous girls of the Island. Today, the school is co-educational from Pre-school to Year 6. We also have an outstation school at Wurankuwu.
