Mackenzie River State School is a semi-isolated rural one-teacher school located in the Central Highlands area of Central Queensland (Mackay-Whitsunday Education District) and the Capricornia School Sport Region, approximately 95 kilometres north of Dingo and 36 kilometres south of Middlemount.
The school population comes from the area called The Brigalow Area where the primary production is beef cattle and some hay and grain growing. The school was opened in 1973 and provides for the learning opportunities of the rural families.
Being a Band 5 school, the 'class' is multi-aged, and all students must work and play together, while aiming to achieve their year level Essential Learnings. The Brigalow Cluster was formed in 2008 to develop upon an existing sporting cluster association of small rural schools (Brigalow Sport Carnivals) who are part of the Mackay/Whitsunday region.
